Orientation Activities and Healthy Living

We run orientation programs and bridging course for S.1 students. Through the 'Big Brother and Big Sister Scheme', we train senior form students to help S.1 students integrate into our school and cultivate the spirit of mutual help. From S.1 to S.5, we adopt the Dual Class-teacher system to provide more help and support to students. At the same time, we organize various inter-class and inner-class activities to foster students' sense of belonging to school. All S.1 and S.2 students have lunch at school. After lunch, diversified activities are arranged to enhance students' growth.

School Facilities (for Supporting Students with Special Educational Needs)

Our school provides sophisticated facilities to serve different educational purposes. The school library is redesigned and renovated into a modern library to better meet the reading and learning needs of students. A grant of $1.5 million was offered by Sir David Trench Fund for Recreation to build a dual tracks and two Gym rooms located on the 6/F and the G/F. With the generous support from the Incorporated Management Committee, our covered playground was renovated into a multi-purpose hall. The Design & Technology room was converted into a STEM Laboratory with a stylish Learning Commons to make it a better learning environment.
Our students have the first priority to get access to Chinese YMCA of Hong Kong Wu Kai Sha Youth Village and various related facilities in all YMCA youth centers. The two YMCA hotels (Hong Kong) offer internship program for our students who are taking Tourism and Hospitality Studies.

School Management Organisation:
The Incorporated Management Committee (IMC) has been set up for Chinese YMCA College. The Chinese YMCA of Hong Kong appoints Directors and a full-time Chief Education Officer to be the sponsoring body managers of the IMC to supervise the school affairs. The management committee comprises independent school manager, teachers, parents and alumni.

School Green Policy:
Our school has been working on green education, from aspects like establishing related administrative structure, creating green atmosphere, classroom teaching to organising extra-curricular activities. Our goal is to link green lifestyle closely with school education. Our efforts in green education are recognised by external parties. Our school got the 'Sustainable Development Community Project Award' presented by the Environment Bureau, 'Young Green Pioneers Award', the bronze medal in Environmental Campaign Committee's 'Hong Kong Green School Award' and a three-star award in Hong Kong Electric's 'Be Green Be Happy Award'. We have also successfully applied for funding from the 'BEC Jockey Club Intelligent Resource Management Programme' to set up Green Ambassador Scheme with two students from each junior form class and one student from each senior form class serving as ambassadors.

Learning and Teaching Plan

Whole-school Language Policy:
Our school concerns the language development of students and is proactively working to elevate students' ability in Chinese, English and Putonghua. To enhance English proficiency, our school is blessed with the support from the Chinese YMCA of Hong Kong in arranging interns from Germany to visit our school on a weekly basis to organize English learning activities for students. Regarding the curriculum, we provide S.1 English Bridging Course and arrange bi-annual English Week. Mathematics and Integrated Science for junior forms are taught in English. English Language Across Curriculum – Integrated Humanities is also offered. 'Chinese Culture Week' is held annually to arouse students' interest in learning Chinese culture and language. One class in S.1 and S.2 adopts Putonghua as the medium of instruction in teaching Chinese Language.

Learning and Teaching Strategies:
We focus on promoting self-directed learning in junior form teaching, hoping students will adopt an active learning style. Students' critical thinking, creativity, problem-solving skills and skills in information technology are expected to be nurtured through co-curricular activities and multi-learning curriculum. Students' performance in public exams and their integrated skills are our prior concerns in the senior secondary curriculum. Apart from the traditional arts and science subjects, we also provide different subjects such as Business, Accounting and Financial Studies, Physical Education and Ethics and Religious Studies to encourage learning and development in different fields. BYOD (bring your own device) is implemented in S.1 to S.4. Students bring their own tablet devices and conduct e-learning activities during the lesson.

School-based curriculum:
1. Electives: 3X. Students are free to choose different subjects according to their interests and abilities.
2. Curriculum highlights: We offer a diversified and balanced curriculum in junior forms. There are cross-curricular English courses for S.1 to S.3 students. Co-curricular activities such as English drama classes are also provided for students to cater for different interests and promote whole-person development. English reading lessons are arranged for junior forms students so as to help them acquire reading skills and strategies. Besides, we emphasize virtue development. Through morning assemblies, weekly assemblies, cross-curricular activities, extended learning activities and Religious Studies lessons, positive value to life is infused. Moral, Civic and National Education Section offers tailor-made materials for teaching students positive values in the class teacher lessons.

Life Planning Education:
Career mapping in our school focuses on helping students develop and realize their own 'Dream' for the future. The Career Guidance Section together with the efforts of each teacher, have been trying to guide students to recognize their personal path, to develop personal goals and to seek out their future aspirations. In order to nourish students' enthusiasm in following their own 'Dream', we organize a wide variety of activities so as to provide abundant learning opportunities for them. These activities include SIM working-life games, job-shadowing, business-school partnership programs, firm visits, media workshop, etc. Through these experiences, students are able to widen their horizons, view things from different perspectives and thus maximise their personal growth.

Student Support

Whole School Approach to Catering for Learner Diversity:
There are after-school enhancement and remedial classes in junior and senior forms to cater for learning diversity. A learning support committee is also set up, specializing in caring and looking after the students in need. In junior forms, there are different learning and support classes to help students with homework and build up active learning and self-directed learning habits. Our school's emphasis is on Christian education. Through different contacts and personal conferences, teachers encourage students to have a reflection on life and to understand religion. Students are also nurtured, from the Christian perspective, to take on challenges, love their life and develop their potential to the fullest, leading a life of 'Love God and Love Man'. We have an additional social worker for promoting leadership training, workshops and voluntary work training to help students develop their potential. We also have partnership with various churches/organizations to provide support for religious education ministry and pastoral care in school. In Religious Studies lesson, we have an ALPHA Course for students to be exposed to gospel messages and to give them support for personal growth.

Whole School Approach to Integrated Education:
The school is committed to developing an inclusive school culture and making good use of the resources allocated by the Education Bureau to support students with special education needs in a 'whole school approach'. We provide students with appropriate and diversified supports to enhance their learning effectiveness and help them integrate into school life. The school also attaches great importance to home-school cooperation. A communication mechanism was established for parents to discuss with school about the strategies for supporting students through different channels. The school provides various supports for students with special education needs and lower academic achievement including the establishment of a 'Student Support Team'. The group members include SEN coordinator, counselling master, support teachers, social worker, educational psychologist, etc. At the same time, additional assistant teachers are employed to take care of individual differences in the 'whole school approach'. In addition, we arrange pull-out/after-school support classes (Chinese Language, English Language and Mathematics) and purchase speech therapy services to provide group/individual speech therapy/training for students with speech and language impairment. The students in need are also provided with adjustments in study, homework, and assessment. In addition, the school has invited the Education Bureau, the Education University of Hong Kong and NGO to provide training for teachers or students, including the support for students with special education needs in the 'whole school approach'.

Measures to provide adaptation for Learning and Assessment:
We adopt a diversified assessment mode (e.g. lesson observation, students' participation, assignment performance, OLE portfolio, outside classroom field trip and project-based learning, etc.) and different assessment strategies, including students' self-evaluation, peer and teachers' evaluation on students' learning progress. Apart from regular tests and exams, every subject has continual formative assessment for students. Assessment of junior forms students is mainly conducted in 6 subjects including Chinese Language, English Language, Mathematics, Chinese History, Integrated Humanities and Integrated Science.

Home-School Co-operation and School Ethos

Home-School Co-operation:
Cooperation between parents and school is highly valued. We keep close contact with parents via convenient and diversified channels. Home visits are held every year to get parents acquainted with their children's school performances, which is significant in nurturing the students. This arrangement is widely welcomed by parents and students. The efforts paid by teachers are also appreciated by parents.

School Ethos:
Students are well-behaved with self-discipline. They respect teachers and get along well with their peers. They are active in participating in extra-curricular activities and voluntary work, taking their duties seriously. In those activities, they show commitment and enthusiasm in serving people. Student leaders are also responsible and eager in serving their fellow schoolmates.

Our school values the professional development of teachers. The measures for professional development include the followings:
1. Offering subsidies for teachers to enhance their English proficiency and keep abreast of development of their subjects.
2. Conducting collaborative lesson planning in Chinese Language, English Language, Mathematics, Citizenship and Social Development, Integrated Science and Integrated Humanities to enhance the effectiveness of teaching.
3. Organizing orientation and workshops for new colleagues to help them adapt to the new working environment.
4. Establishing award schemes to credit staff for good performance.
5. Encouraging teachers to share school-based experience in educational forum held in Hong Kong, mainland and overseas.
6. Seconding teachers to the EDB.

Life-wide Learning (including Five Essential Learning Experiences to be provided through Key Learning Areas, extra-curricular activities, co-curricular activities, etc.):
Our sponsoring body YMCA has a strong international network, which provides our students with plenty of opportunities to participate in international exchange activities. For instance, we participated in the YMCA 175 event held in London, YMCA World Council held in Chiang Mai, the tree-planting activity in the desert areas of Shaanxi, and the YMCA exchange camps with German high school students.
We offer over thirty extra-curricular activities and place emphasis on voluntary services. The implementation of the 'One student, One service' volunteer program gives students opportunities for all-rounded development.
The 'One student, One musical instrument' scheme is implemented in junior forms. We organize a school band and a variety of musical instrument classes. Our school band has been a frequent winner of the Golden and Silver Awards in 'Hong Kong Youth Music Interflows Symphonic Band Contest' and 'Joint School Music Competition'. We organize inter-school music camp and joint-school symphonic band concert every year.
We perform outstandingly in sports. We have won numerous awards in different inter-school competitions in the events of track and field, cross country, basketball, volleyball and handball. We have nurtured dozens of Hong Kong team players over the years. Our sports teams including the cycling team, bowling, baseball and especially the handball team continue to make us proud.
Cooperating with sponsoring body, we have established league teams comprising elite athletes from our school. We are staying in top ranks in various large-scale local sporting events in recent years.

Others

Chinese YMCA College encourages students to pursue their dreams and engage themselves in meaningful endeavours. We are proud and happy to recognise their achievements in academics, services and sports etc. through different awards. Over the past few years in particular, about thirty students with outstanding achievements in sports were either selected to join the Hong Kong sports teams, or granted early admission offered by universities.
Every year, our school supervisor, Dr. Ronald Lu, sponsors two students with remarkable English results to go for a one-month exchange trip in Europe, the United States or Australia. In addition, we proudly nominate students for scholarships (such as the Sir Edward Youde Memorial Fund) and encourage them to challenge themselves in elite training programmes organized by universities.
Chinese YMCA College has been actively promoting STEM education through a series of activities. We burst with pride for our students who were respectively awarded the Best Creativity Silver Award and the Best Team Award in Zhu Hai, Hong Kong, Macau Maker Competition; Championship in Web Design Competition: E-Commerce; Silver Award in IT Innovation Competition: Robot Challenge; Silver Award in Underwater Robot Competition organized by the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology; 1st runner-up in the Secondary School Solar Remote-controlled Car Design Competition; Best Melody Design Award in the HK Projection Mapping Festival 4; First Prize and Most Creative Award in Swift Coding Club Hackathon@Ocean Park Coding Competition etc. Above all, the e-Learning proposal of our school was crowned Silver in both the school division and individual division of International Outstanding e-Learning Awards. Our school has also won the Merit Award (Secondary School Category) in OpenSchool STEM Teaching Plan Competition 2017; Outstanding STEM School Award; Award for Outstanding Institution in Technology Education 2018. Three of our teachers were presented with the Certificate of Merit of Chief Executive's Award for Teaching Excellence (Science Education). These achievements surely reflect our efforts and have gained recognition in STEM education.
In addition, in order to encourage students to learn from experience, our school applies for resources through different channels to arrange overseas exchange activities for students. Exchange destinations include the UK, the US, Hungary, Czech Republic, Germany, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Korea, Singapore, Taiwan, Vietnam, Thailand and different provinces in China. A variety of activities such as English workshops, historical and cultural field trips, introduction of different ethnicity and geographical explorations certainly inspire our students much more than what a mere classroom and a textbook could offer.
Our school is keen on promoting the education of creative thinking and innovative technology. It has been our great honour to host the Odyssey of the Mind Hong Kong Regional Tournament since 2017. It may be the first of its kind that a subsidized school organizes a Hong Kong Regional Tournament of a world competition. The winning teams are qualified to compete for Hong Kong at the World Finals held in the United States. In 2021, Division IV was newly opened for the university students to get more students involved. This year, the teams of our school have got three champions and one second place in four different problems and advanced to the Virtual World Finals.
Our school is conducting a three-year cooperation with Project Zero, which is an educational research community at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, to allow teachers to receive training from scholars and seek teaching innovation through learning community. The research results will be applied to our school to enhance the quality of teaching and promote the teaching team's professional growth.
