Learning and Teaching Plan
Whole-school Language Policy:
Learner diversity is well taken care of through group teaching in Chinese and English Language. The design and provision of a rich language environment and an English Language Centre can maximize our students’ exposure and use of the target languages. Language activities and games are conducted by the NET teacher for students. In junior forms, non-language subject teachers design tasks for students to review the concepts and contents covered in the mother tongue in English. Reading programs and verse-speaking competitions are also organized to enhance their interest in language learning.
Learning and Teaching Strategies:
Our teachers design scaffolding activities to help our students to construct their subject knowledge, to apply and reinforce their knowledge learnt. We teach them appropriate learning strategies, and encourage them to make good use of diversified modes of learning (e.g. e-learning, real-time online teaching, online learning platforms, extensive reading and project work, etc.) to facilitate their learning. We promote and implement self-directed learning and life-wide learning. Teachers adapt the curriculum, learning activities and teaching pace according to students' prior knowledge, abilities, interests and needs, in order to embrace learner diversity. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, our school adopts different modes of teaching, including the use of (i) real-time online teaching (ii) online homework guidance (iii) different online learning platforms (such as Google Classroom, ClassDojo and Nearpod) to support students’ learning and to embrace learner diversity.
School-based curriculum:
1. Electives: 2X. Students can choose according to their own interest an Applied Learning course in any one of the six areas of studies.
2. Curriculum highlights: School-based curriculum is developed to suit students’ interest and abilities in learning. Our teachers have been adapting and designing teaching materials to arouse students’ interest in learning. We also offer a variety of Other Learning Experiences to our S.1 to S.4 students.
Development of the Four Key Tasks:
1. One of the school's major concerns from 2018-2021 is to further develop self-directed learning through helping students form a hobby in reading. We organize a variety of activities, including book exhibits, teacher-student book sharing sessions and recommended book-sharing. We also have teachers from each of the eight key learning areas provide recommended list of materials related to the teaching modules for students to read.
2. Various subjects (including STEM-related subjects) assign students to do project tasks which aim to equip students in forming a habit on self-directed learning. Some projects even require them to do cross-curricular tasks.
3. Life-wide learning approach is adopted to promote moral and civic education. Subject teachers integrate moral and civic education elements in lessons. Through organizing extra-curricular and thematic activities, and taking students on excursions to China, we enhance our students’ understanding towards their motherland. In the school year 2018-19, our teachers and students visited three of our sister schools in China, namely Shenzhen No.2 Experimental School, Taiyuan No.12 Middle School and Xiamen No.2 High School. Students took part in competitions, school tours, lesson observations and experience sharing. Through exchange and collaboration, they have enhanced their understanding and communication with students in the Mainland.
4. Multi-media learning resources and school-based materials have been used in teaching.
Life Planning Education:
Aims:
1. To cultivate students' abilities on self-understanding, life planning, goal-setting and self-reflecting;
2. To enhance students' understanding of multi-pathways of further studies and career development.
Implementation Strategies:
1. A school-based life planning education curriculum is implemented with different themes for each form. a) The main focus for the junior forms is on self-development. Lessons are conducted to help students explore their career interests, identify their potential and set goals for the future. b) As for the senior forms, we target on enhancing students’ understanding towards further studies and careers pathways. Through various activities, we widen students’ horizons and prepare them to make responsible choices for their future.
2. Careers teachers meet with F5 and F6 students weekly to give them guidance on knowledge and skills in preparing for further studies and career development.
3. Teachers of other key learning areas and activity groups also help facilitate students in making connection between their study and academic or career aspirations. Careers teachers guide students in understanding their life-planning plans. The English Department opts for the Workplace Communication module to teach students workplace English. The Liberal Studies Department works jointly with the Careers Section in leading students on doing a career related project.
4. Apart from teachers, we seek support from parents. Talks are held to provide them with information of the latest employment trends and directions. Careers teachers also frequently attend life planning education and career guidance activities to equip themselves for providing quality service to students.

Home-School Co-operation and School Ethos
Home-School Co-operation:
Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) helps to plan parent education and activities. Parents' opinions are collected through IMC meetings, PTA meetings and daily communication. Diversified activities are held to help parents enhance their knowledge and skills needed for educating their children. Our parents provide appropriate support to the school by participating in volunteering services and being helpers in excursions, etc. The School also utilizes resources and the expertise of parents to enhance parent-teacher cooperation. Since 2014, our school has participated in the biennial competition organized by the Hong Kong Eastern District PTA Federation and our PTA won the award “Star of Home-School Partnership” in 2014-15, 2016-17 and 2018-19. The competition aims to acknowledge PTA’s effort in leading school activities.
School Ethos:
The school places great emphasis on unlocking the students’ latent capacities and developing their potentials in various fields to foster whole-person development and balanced education, alongside the adoption of the whole school approach in discipline and counseling to cultivate positive behavior and the right minds. The harmonious teacher-student relationship is distinctive and advice sought from teachers regarding the students’ life planning strategies are well-received. To promote the caring atmosphere, the ‘Big Brothers, Big Sisters Program’ is launched to provide a platform for S.4 and S.5 students to assist S.1 and S.2 students respectively in tackling personal growth problems encountered. Two form teachers are allocated for each S.1 to S.4 class to maximize attention and care. Many value-based and goal-orientated functions and projects have been organized to cater for the students’ needs. A series of award schemes and programs are also introduced to reinforce the students’ positive performance in both the academic and non-academic fields to achieve whole-person development.
