Ko Lui Secondary School is a Aided Co-ed secondary school located in Hong KongThe school was founded in 1971. The school is located in Kwun Tong, and covers an area of approximately 8000 square meters. The supervisor/chairman of the school management committee is Wong Ka Ho Danny Dr.,And the principal is Wong Sheung Kam Ms. (BSc, Cert. Ed, MEd). The sponsoring body of Ko Lui Secondary School is Kochow & Luichow Residents Association Ltd. and is a non-religious school. The mission of the school: "Ko Lui Secondary School policy has always aimed at creating an enjoyable and positive learning environment for students. We teach with the students’ abilities and interests in mind. We believe that education should be for everyone, no matter their background or aptitude. We aim to provide a well-rounded intellectual program, while encompassing ethics, physical education, social skills and aesthetics. Secondary One Entrance

Our school will accept discretionary places. Our school will participate in the Secondary School Places Allocation System through central allocation stage (Applicable for admission to S.1 in September 2023 ).The school interviews all applicants and their parents in Chinese and English. Admission criteria: conduct (30%), internal examination results (30%), interview (20%) and non-academic performance (20%).

Orientation Activities and Healthy Living

After registration, S.1 students are requested to attend a New Comers' Bridging Course, which is held in July to welcome students and introduce them to school life. During this course, students attend English, Chinese, Mathematics, Science and Humanities classes. They also participate in Multiple Intelligence Activity Day and various counselling activities. S.1 Parent Orientation Day will be held at the end of August to inform parents about the school routine and philosophy. There is a Health Education Team which provides health information and formulates a comprehensive prevention and control strategy.

School Management

School's Major Concerns:
1. To cater for learners' diversity and enhance students' learning effectiveness. To improve the reading scheme to boost the amount of reading and expand the level of reading. We also deepen questioning skills in lessons.
2. To practise life education and share a healthy life style.

School Management Organisation:
There are three core organisations in KLSS: the School Executive Committee, the Academic Team and the Student Pastoral Care Team which work closely on planning and implementing school policies. Furthermore, KLSS encourages teachers' participation in decision making.

School Green Policy:
In 2016-17, we took part in Community Involvement Projects for Municipal Solid Waste. In December 2016, we participated in 'Kwun Tong Community Green Station' and 'GREEN@YUE MAN SQUARE'. In 2017-18, we took part in 'School Electricity Usage Scheme - Auditor Ambassador Programme'. Our vision is to nurture cooperation on sustainable development of a green society. Since 2020, we have installed solar panels on the rooftops to promote green energy. In recent years, the school has actively promoted the environmental recycling program. Members of the Pastoral Care Team have implemented recycling activities throughout the campus to educate students their responsibilities. To advocate caring environment, inter-class planting award programmes are held, and hydroponic projects are promoted in STEM courses.

Learning and Teaching Plan

Whole-school Language Policy:
Chinese is the medium of instruction (MOI) in almost every subject, with the following exceptions: (1) S.1-S.6 English lessons; (2) Putonghua, which is used as the MOI in at least one Chinese Language Class in S.1, S.2 and S.3; (3) Certain class in S.1 and S.2 will use English to go through the relevant subject concepts and contents in Life and Society and Science that have already been taught through mother tongue. Extended learning activities in English will also be conducted in certain class of S.3 for Biology, Geography and History.

Learning and Teaching Strategies:
We constantly strive to enhance the effectiveness of our teaching and student learning.
1. We have benefited from the theory of 'Success Education' i.e. we create as many opportunities as possible for students to achieve success and reach their full potential. We set appropriate assignments and give quick feedback so that they can grasp the basics step by step;
2. We apply various teaching strategies such as cooperative learning, e-learning, mastery pedagogy, etc;
3. To foster better learning, BYOD scheme is implemented in senior forms. Students use 'Notability' to jot notes and organise learning materials.
4. We adapt curriculum to cater for students’ learning diversity.
5. Other strategies include: S.1-S.3 Chinese, English and Mathematics set classes, After-school Homework Classes, Preparatory Mathematics Class, S.4-S.6 Enhancement Schemes. Alumni, who are studying at the local universities, are stationed in the Library from 4pm to 7pm every school day, to help students with their homework.

School-based curriculum:
1. Electives: 3X. (3X, Since 2021-2022, the third elective subject is Mathematics Extended Part Module 2 (Algebra and Calculus), Applied Learning , school-based STEM programme, Japanese Language and Culture and Certification of Sports Industry)
2. Curriculum highlights:
(1) To cater for different learning styles, our school put emphasis on employing various teaching strategies;
(2) The school has implemented an S.1-S.3 school-based English curriculum to meet the needs of our students;
(3) STEM courses including Drone programming, robot programming and 3D printing, have been set up to promote the application of new technologies.


Development of the Four Key Tasks:
Reading to Learn: We put a lot of emphasis on encouraging our students to develop good reading habits. We have a 'Twenty Minute Morning Reading' Scheme, 'Junior Form School-based Morning Reading Booklet' and we have implemented the Extensive Reading Scheme and an oral book recommendation activity. For every subject they take, students must read a book related to the topic. Furthermore, we have launched 'Reading Café' to promote students' interests in reading. 2. WIFI connection has been installed in the school. We support students' e-learning with diversified teaching software and learning strategies. 'Google Classroom' has become our whole-school learning platform. BYOD scheme is implemented in senior forms and students are well-supported with e-learning. 3. Through interdisciplinary collaboration, Humanities train junior form students' life skills via project learning.

Life Planning Education:
1. KLSS has implemented personal counselling practices to cater for students’ needs in accordance with the school’s development plan and the students' social needs. 2. To inculcate healthy and correct concepts for further studies and career choices; To train students to plan their future as early as possible, and strengthen students' career plan. 3. KLSS cooperates with NGOs to provide S.6 students with career-oriented OLE activities in order to equip them with the most up-to-date information for their career and life planning. 4. KLSS cooperates with Harriman Property Management, LWK & Partners (HK) Ltd, Grand Hyatt Hong Kong, Cloud Computing in Watsons, etc, to provide job tasting programmes for students. Our teachers strive to enable students to understand themselves in terms of character, values and needs, in order to develop their personal interests and individual potential through their future choice of careers. 5. Actively encourage teachers to participate in training and exchanges related to career planning in order to provide students with updated and more effective career and life planning.

Student Support

Whole School Approach to Catering for Learner Diversity:
The school has completed the 'School-based Professional Support Program' of the Education Bureau. Teaching approaches and materials have been adapted and modified to accommodate different learning abilities. In addition to develop a school-based Learning Activity Sequence framework, teachers from different subject areas have conducted open lessons in the First and Second school terms. The Lesson Study, 'Collaborative Lesson Planning, Lesson Observations and Post-lesson Evaluation' have been implemented in order to develop teaching strategies for our diverse learners. Other strategies used in our school include: interactive teaching, layered questioning skills, collaborative learning, project learning, interdisciplinary collaboration, as well as enhancement and remedial classes at all form levels. In addition, college students who graduated from our school are employed as homework tutors in the library to help students solve problems.

Whole School Approach to Integrated Education:
KLSS is committed to promoting Inclusive Education and establishing an inclusive culture. We provide comprehensive support for students with Special Educational Needs. The school has established a "Student Support Team" with members including the principal, deputy principals, educational psychologists, counselling master, special education needs coordinators and the panel heads of Chinese Language, English Language and Mathematics. Meanwhile, KLSS also uses the Learning Support Grant to hire multi-disciplinary professional team to provide appropriate support to students in need. Services include inclusive education instructors, inclusive education assistants, outsourced speech therapy and various treatment services. In addition, the school provides adjustments such as: extra time, screen readers and voice input. KLSS provides assessment, referral and individual learning plans for students with serious special educational needs, and helps students learn and grow through inter-professional cooperation. KLSS also organizes different types of inclusive activities to promote inclusive culture, such as the project of "Harmony Ambassador", Week of Inclusive Culture, etc. KLSS also attaches importance to home-school cooperation. We hold seminars for parents of students with special educational needs.

Home-School Co-operation and School Ethos

Home-School Co-operation:
The PTA aims to help both students and parents build a sense of belonging in the school. It also works very hard to enhance the communication between students, parents and the school, through a variety of activities, including parents' talks, barbecues, cooking classes, voluntary service and Care Programs for students sitting for public examinations. This fosters a more caring interaction between the school and the students. Our school website also provides parents with timely information to help parents and students build a better parent-child relationship.

School Ethos:
KLSS received the 'Inviting School Fidelity Award' for the year 2017 and 'Outstanding Caring School for Promoting Career and Life Planning Education' in 2019. Last year, KLSS obtained Caring School Award Scheme – Ten Years Honor Award. KLSS focuses on Character Education. A whole-school approach to counselling, discipline, co-curricular activities, civic education and advice for careers and further studies is used to meet our students' needs in the areas of physical, aesthetic and emotional development, life skills, moral values, family and inter-personal relationships. There are two mentors in junior forms and senior forms. Mentors are responsible for students’ growth; take care of them and build up strong and long-lasting relationship with them. Our three-year plan is to practise life education and share a healthy life style. There is a monthly whole school moral theme - courtesy, respect, commitment, developing a sense of responsibility, self-discipline, integrity, caring, gratitude, optimism and perseverance. There are also inter-class competitions, weekly assemblies, level meetings and class periods - all designed to cultivate positive values and healthy attitudes in students. Future Development

School Development Plan:
1. To cater for learners' diversity and enhance students' learning effectiveness: to deepen questioning skills and provide worksheets that cater for different standards so as to challenge the capable ones and encourage the less capable ones;
2. To practice life education and share a healthy life; to promote the physical and mental health of students; to cultivate the quality of Ko Lui students; and to care for and serve the community.

Teacher Professional Training and Development:
KLSS is greatly concerned about enhancing its teachers' professional training in order to enhance the overall learning and teaching effectiveness. KLSS has a series of training programmes for new teachers, so that they can inherit the professional that the school has upheld for many years, and can learn and use different high-effective teaching strategies. The training includes classroom management, e-learning, cooperative learning, questioning skills, disciplinary and counseling skills, etc. In recent years, KLSS has been more active in developing e-learning platforms, allowing every teacher to conduct e-learning classes, and applying the scaffolding techniques to cater for learners' diversity.

1. All S.1-S.3 students can choose one activity from the following: Chinese musical instruments, dance, ball games, athletics, Chinese martial arts, skipping, digital production or drama. S.4-S.5 students can continue to further develop their talent in above mentioned activities, or opt to taste art therapy, graffiti design, pet care, animation dubbing, mobile phone repair or more in Creative and Life Skills Education. These activities help to enhance creativity and communication skills. They provide a variety of opportunities for our students to gain confidence on stage and to develop their performance potential to the fullest.
2. We offer up to 37 co-curricular activities for students giving them the opportunity to take part in a wide variety of learning experiences. These programs consist of sports, arts, academic studies, recreational and career-related activities. Students can enroll in classes such as darts, water-color painting, English debate, Science, aerial photography, business and marketing, cooking, badminton and handball.
3. There is a Life-wide Learning Day in each school term. Students enrich their learning experiences outside the classroom through visiting, field trip and project learning in different key learning areas.

Others

KLSS develops STEM education and has integrated four STEM subjects — Science, Computer, Mathematics and Design and Technology to strengthen students' ability to synthesize and apply knowledge and skills in the above KLAs. The school encourages students to actively participate in different off-campus competitions. Students have performed well in various competitions and won many awards. For example, in the 2020-2021 ROBOMASTER Competition (Hong Kong Station), KLSS won the "Hong Kong 1st Runner-up" and the Energy Activation Award; In the 2021 National Youth Drone Challenge (Hong Kong Station) Maze Exploration Competition, KLSS won the "Hong Kong 3rd Runner-up"; In the Kwun Tong and Sai Kung District Inter-School Drone Programming Competition, KLSS won the overall championship and first runner-up, the most innovative drone design, the best cooperative team, the first and second runner-up in the programming task competition, and the first and second runner-up in the programming group flying exhibition competition; In the "Hong Kong Academic Robot Sumo Competition", KLSS won the "Secondary Silver Award" and the "Secondary Bronze Award". Our school participated in the cloud computing pilot program organized by Alibaba SEEK FOUNDATION. Students participated in the work internship in the summer vacation for one month. After many interviews, KLSS successfully obtained 5 internship positions and went to the IT department of Watsons for an internship. In addition, due to the outstanding performance of our students in this course, they were invited by e-Zone magazine to share their experience.

To encourage and reward all students, outstanding academic and non-academic achievers, we offer a variety of scholarships. Scholarships to promote student development in physical education and the arts are also available for those who perform with excellence in these areas.

KLSS establishes Chinese Orchestra, Drama Club and Dance Club to recognize our students’ whole-person development and encourage excellence in student academic performance, as well as in the areas of aesthetics and sports. Our Chinese Orchestra have been awarded silver and bronze in the 'Hong Kong Youth Music Interflows – Chinese Orchestra Contest' in recent years. Moreover, members of our Chinese Orchestra won numerous solo champion awards in the Hong Kong Schools Music Festival. Some members also received outstanding results in the Hong Kong Schools Music Festival (Chinese Instrumental Music solo). Apart from local performances, our Chinese Orchestra gave performances in Singapore, Malaysia, Beijing, Taiwan, Shenzhen, Nansha, Zhanjiang, Maoming, Xiamen’s Kulangsu.

Our Drama Society was awarded 'Champion', 'Best Screenplay', 'Best Costume Design' and 'Most Popular Team' prizes in the 'Building Safety Drama Competition for Hong Kong Secondary School 2019' organised by the Buildings Department. In 2021, the Drama Society won the Best Screenplay Award and the Best Supporting Actor Award in the drama competition organised by PAVAS Education Foundation Limited. Members of the Dance Society won a Grade A Award in the 55th Schools Dance Festival Jazz & Street Dance (Secondary Section) and a silver prize in the 47th Open Dance Contest.
