Learning and Teaching Plan
Whole-school Language Policy:
English is the major medium of instruction in school (except Chinese Language, Chinese History, Biblical Knowledge and Life Enrichment, and Putonghua). To prepare our students to be global citizens, we train them to be trilingual and biliterate. Since 1926, Putonghua has already been incorporated into the formal curriculum. In order to promote the students' interest in learning languages as well as raising their communication skills, they are encouraged to participate in the Speech Festivals. The Native English Speaking Teacher (NET) and language teachers organized various activities, e.g. English Monday, to enhance the English proficiency of our students. Teachers of subjects using English as the medium of instruction also collaborate to develop common language across curriculum.
Learning and Teaching Strategies:
We provide students with a lively and well-equipped learning environment to nurture their moral and intellectual development, and foster their sense of responsibility and willingness to serve. Also, we develop students' potential in independent thinking and creativity in a liberal learning atmosphere. Different subject panels organize various co-curricular activities or competitions to motivate students to learn, enhance their study and leadership skills, and develop their ability to work independently. Through interactive learning and teaching, students' interest and motivation in learning are enhanced. Besides learning from textbooks, more emphasis is placed on promoting the high order thinking skills of our students. Learning strategies such as goal setting, reflection, pre-lesson preparation, note-taking and teachers' modelling of applying metacognitive skills in learning, self assessment and peer assessment are adopted to cultivate students' awareness and abilities in self-directed learning.
School-based curriculum:
1. Electives: 3X and 4X. By using block timetabling, it is flexible for students to have different combinations of electives. They are allowed to choose electives from different key learning areas, which include Science, PSHE, Technology and Aesthetic Development.
2. Curriculum highlights: Life and Society courses are offered to all junior form students. A student-centred, issue-enquiry approach is adopted for learning and teaching in this subject. It aims to broaden students’ knowledge base and enhance their social awareness through the study of a wide range of issues. Besides, Accounting Fundamentals and Economics Fundamentals have been introduced to F.3 students. It is based on the three curricula, namely SS BAFS, SS Economics and Life and Society (F.1 – F.3). All the teaching and learning materials are developed through the collaboration of our experienced teachers and for a better preparation of our students in their studies in senior curriculum. In 2016/17, a school-based course, Life Enrichment, is offered to F.1 and F.2 students. Study skills, information literacy, career and life planning, personal financial planning and value education are included in this course.
