Home-School Co-operation and School Ethos

Home-School Co-operation:
It has been 45 years since the establishment of the Parents' Association. A general meeting is held regularly with the presence of the Principal, Vice Principal and members of the Community Liaison Team. In the general meetings, school affairs are discussed and school improvement policies are formulated for the creation of a more favourable learning environment. Every year, the Parents' Association organises a wide variety of activities such as S.1 Parents' Orientation, 'Parents-Appreciate-Teachers-Day' and Chinese New Year Gathering. The Parents' Association also cooperates with our Counselling Team and social workers to organize a series of voluntary work activities for parents. Through these activities, it is our objective to raise parents' concerns on children's school life and development, thus fostering the parent-child relationship and family harmony. Apart from this, the Parents' Association also plays an active role in various school development tasks to strengthen 'Home-School Cooperation', for instance, helping with the promotion work of Shatin Secondary School Tours, sponsoring scholarships and taking part in the tendering of the school's tuck shop and catering service.

School Ethos:
To nurture NgYukers with 'Confidence, Care, and Commitment', our school conducts various activities to realise the school motto of 'Nurturing oneself so as to reach out to others'. Our school promotes a 'positive and thanksgiving culture'. A dual class teacher and dual form teacher system in junior forms is in place to provide better pastoral care for students. By fostering students’ moral values and promoting life education as well as various award and punishment schemes, students can learn to tell the rights from wrongs, build proper self-values, and establish a positive and optimistic attitude towards life so as to realize the objective of 'nurturing oneself' in the school motto. To actualise the spirit of 'Reaching out to others', all S2 and S4 students also serve the elderly by staging performances and conducting home visits. Meanwhile, the message of ‘Nurturing oneself through diversified learning, Reaching out to others through giving back to society’ is emphasized in assembly periods.

Our school offers various prizes and scholarships to students, encouraging them to strive for progress. In 2013, a ‘Study Tour for Outstanding Students’ was launched to award students for their outstanding performance in academic pursuit, conduct, sports and arts, leadership and service as well as whole-person development.

(2) Development of creative education
(3) Enrichment of after-school learning
(4) Scholarship of Wheelock Properties Limited
(5) Fostering holistic education
(6) Arts and sports nurturing
(7) Corporate-School Life Path Mapping Programme
(8) Teachers' professional development

In 2013, the Education Bureau conducted an External School Review in our school and positive feedback was given to our holistic approach to education. As pointed out in the report, our school took great enthusiasm in the launching of the school-based curriculum reform, which successfully explored students’ potentials. Besides, we were able to take advantage of small class teaching to develop 'Self-directed Learning'. Our dedication to creating a caring school culture, nurturing students’ leadership skills and cultivating students' serving spirit was also recognized and commended in the report.

Teacher Professional Training and Development:
Facing the keen competition brought by globalisation, teachers' professional development is emphasised in our school. For years, our school has been supported by renowned experts of various subjects from the Quality School Improvement Project of CUHK, who have been involved in our discussions on subject-based and form-based lesson study, 'Self-directed Learning', peer lesson observation and peer book inspection, to enhance learning efficacy inside and outside classrooms. Besides attending 'Joint-School Teachers' Professional Development Day' organized by 'Project WeCan', we also opened our classrooms and conducted sharing sessions in the 'Self-directed Learning Network - Teachers' Development Week' launched by the Hong Kong Association of Heads of Secondary Schools to explore ways of raising the effectiveness of Self-directed Learning. Our school organises various Information Technology workshops so as to help students learn more effectively amid the pandemic.

Life-wide Learning (including Five Essential Learning Experiences to be provided through Key Learning Areas, extra-curricular activities, co-curricular activities, etc.):
For students' sustainable development physically and artistically, our school has designed a programme called 'One Sport/Art Item for Each' for all S.1 students since 2008. To further broaden students’ horizons, we also launched the ‘Nurturing programme for S.2 and S.3 students on Sports and Art' in 2010 and 2012 respectively. The programme covers musical instruments, skills of various ball games, rock climbing, cycling, AR, STEM, rope skipping, yoyo, mindfulness, gardening, variety entertainment, application of Internet of Things, balloon twisting and so on. Since 2013, all S.1 to S.3 students take part in a sport or art programme after school every Tuesday.

The diverse talents and potentials of our students and teachers are best demonstrated in the prizes and awards gained. Our students were presented with the Youth Arch Top 10 Student Improvement Awards for 9 years since 2011.
