Learning and Teaching Plan
Whole-school Language Policy:
We have classes using English as the medium of instruction at junior levels. For other junior classes, Mathematics and Science are taught in English and therefore students' English proficiency can be greatly improved. Small class teaching helps to enhance the English Language proficiency of students. Students are divided into small classes for the English lessons and there are altogether 33 teaching groups, which are conducive to individual counselling. The percentage of our students reaching Levels 3 or above in Chinese Language and English Language are above the average of all candidates. Our English debating team won the Hong Kong Secondary School Debate Competition - Division 2 Championship. Our morning assemblies are conducted in Cantonese, English and Putonghua. Supported by QSIP of CUHK, the English and Science Departments work together on language across the curriculum (LAC) to enhance students' ability to learn various subjects in English.
Learning and Teaching Strategies:
1. HKDSE: We have good HKDSE results as a result of supplementary lessons after school and during school holidays. The average percentage of all subjects at Level 2 or above was above 95%. In recent years, the percentage for S.6 graduates meeting the basic university entrance requirements was higher than the local average, while nearly 90% of our students met the basic requirements for sub-degree courses. Most of our graduates continued their studies at various universities and post-secondary institutions.
2. Learning and teaching: We promote self-regulated learning, placing emphasis on lesson preparation and note-taking skills. We adopt ‘Assessment for Learning’ and implement interactive learning approaches in our lessons. We especially focus on the development of our students’ reading ability and the learning of core subjects.
School-based curriculum:
1. Electives: 2X and 3X. Students can also take Mathematics Extended Part Module 2 as an elective.
2. Curriculum highlights: We offer 10 subjects to cater for students' diverse interests. Small group learning and teaching are carried out in core subjects. Also, we offer school based STEM courses and learning skills for junior form students. Arts Education and Career and Life Planning lessons are implemented at senior secondary levels.
Development of the Four Key Tasks:
1. Moral and Civic Education: Moral and Civic Education is integrated into form teacher periods, assemblies, 'Sunshine' lessons, talks and workshops are held regularly to instil positive values and mindset in students.
2. Reading to learn: An Extensive Reading Scheme and school-based reading awards are implemented to enhance students’ reading proficiency. Students are required to read both Chinese and English newspapers. Junior forms and S.4 students are required to read at least 24 and 21 books a year respectively. Our school library is open even during school holidays and we spend a minimum of $100,000 on the purchase of new books every year.
3. Project learning: Co-curricular activities and project-based learning are promoted. For example, the Chinese Department and Chinese History Department co-organize annual field trips to different parts of Hong Kong. Students studying Geography go on field trips every year. Apart from field trips, Biology students take part in after-school bio-engineering projects.
4. Information Technology for Interactive Learning: School-based STEM programmes are offered in junior forms. Activities are designed to cultivate students' interest in innovative technology, thus enhancing students' ability to apply science, technology, engineering and mathematics in daily life. The programmes also encourage teamwork and the development of problem-solving skills. Through inter-school competitions, students' horizons are broadened. Our school won the Recognition for Outstanding Performance in Social Innovation-Community 4.0 Competition and championship in Shaping Our Future City 2022
