Orientation Activities and Healthy Living

During the summer holidays, the school provides various activities for our new Secondary 1 students, including courses for English enrichment, computer literacy, physical fitness and study habit enhancement; talks on psychology and team-building activities. Every school year begins with an induction programme for the whole school, but with special emphasis for Secondary 1 students, to help them establish a good school and class ethos, set learning objectives and develop study skills. Activities include instructions in reading and writing, training in class self-management, development of study habits, sharing of achievements etc.

The special features of advanced technology and variety of school facilities surpass those of the standard millennium school design. All classes have their own home rooms and there is no need to have floating classes.

Learning and Teaching Plan

Whole-school Language Policy:
1. Our school allocates large amounts of resources to strengthen students' English foundation and enhance good academic results. Our school has a strong and experienced English-teacher team. The team enhances the students’ learning effectiveness by teaching research.
2. Four classes are splitted into 5 groups in both English and Chinese lessons in Secondary 1 and 6 levels. Focused summer Languages-tutorials are tailored for Secondary 6 students.
3. In junior forms, students in 2 classes are using English as the medium of learning, especially in subjects like Science, Mathematics, as well as Geography and Computer Literacy. The contact time assigned to teach in English has increased progressively in the aforementioned junior form subjects.
4. “English Thursday” on every Thursday, topic sharing in weekly English morning assemblies, English ambassadors, English Summer Camp, inter-school English Games Day with sister schools, public sharings after ex-territorial learnings are organized to nurture the English atmosphere at campus.
5. Formal reading lessons (on every Monday, Tuesday and Thursday), inter-form “Reading Salon” and book sharings among teachers and students, reading report award scheme, book crossing corners and immersed reading programmes are organized throughout the school year.

Learning and Teaching Strategies:
1. Professional knowledge driven: Continuous reflection and implementation of effective curriculum planning, implementation and evaluation with reference to education theories and latest curriculum and assessment guides.
2. Promoting blended learning: The “BYOD” policy is implemented in all classes (begins in 2016). Apart from paper-based materials, students and teachers are well-equipped to use the electronic learning management system (LMS) for instruction and learning. We believe it helps to enhance learning effectiveness and cultivate a self-directed learning habit of students.
3. The curriculum matches current needs. Apart from subject-based knowledge, we emphasize the development of capabilities, habits and attitude for life-long learning.

School-based curriculum:
1. Electives: 2X and 3X. 14 elective subjects are offered for students to choose.
2. Curriculum highlights: School management and staff are experienced in school-based curriculum development. “STEM” curriculum is implemented in normal lessons, emphasizes problem solving skills. “Integrated Humanities” places emphasize on concept application and generalization; “Integrated Sciences” emphasizes scientific inquiry and project learning.

Development of the Four Key Tasks:
1. Whole-school reading lessons are arranged every Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. Immersed reading and writing programmes are launched throughout the school year. The school library holdings stand at more than 30,000 titles. In addition, a large number of series and e-book platforms are available for loan.
2. Our school has extensive experience in the implementation of project learning and cooperative learning, which was well recognized by the education sector in Hong Kong. Cross-curricular learning projects are implemented in Secondary 2 and 3.
3. We adopt a twin class teacher system from S.1 to S.4. The Personal and Social Education lessons, coupled with the Life Planning Education curriculum, Leadership Training Programme(s), and community service activities, guide students to build up self-esteem, proper and positive values and civic awareness.

Whole School Approach to Catering for Learner Diversity:
1. Our School caters for students' learning diversity in various aspects. The strategies adopted are:
 a. Group teaching is adopted in the core subjects of Secondary 1 and 6. Curriculum, learning content and teaching strategies are adjusted accordingly to better cater for the diverse needs of students;
 b. After-school homework classes are arranged for students to consolidate their classroom learning after school every day.
 c. After-school group tutorials are launched to facilitate students of the senior form elective subjects to reach their potential.
 d. Academic contest teams and societies provide opportunities for students with different talents and interests to apply and extend their classroom learning by participating in international and territory-wide competitions, organizing speech and debates, field trips, as well as subject promotion activities in campus.
2. Whole school approach is adopted to promote integrated education.

Whole School Approach to Integrated Education:
Student Support Team, with Special Educational Needs Coordinator, Special Educational Needs Support Teachers, counselors, educational psychologist and speech therapist as team members, is established to coordinate school policies and programmes to cater for student diversity. Whole school approach is adopted to promote integrated education. We provide various training services such as speech, social skills and learning skills for our students. 1. Students had satisfactory performance in the 2022 Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE) Examination. Starting from 2018, our best students can score 29-31 points in five DSE subjects. The university admission rates are good as a result.

2. Our students are keen on participating activities in the field of academic as well as cultural arts. Our students have received honorable awards in international and territory-wide Science competitions. Our students also receive awards in the inter-school competitions such as Grantham Visual Arts Award, Healthy Poster Creation Contest, Hong Kong Schools Music and Speech Festival, Joint School Music Competition, NT Joint School Debating Competition, Asia International Mathematical Olympiad Open (HKMO Open) and Open Dance Contest.

3. Our students demonstrated gifted talents and outstanding performance in territory wide competitions. Students of our school Handball Team, Rope Skipping Team, Rugby Team, Beach Volley Ball Team and Soccer Team have been chosen as the members of the Hong Kong U-18 Team. They have represented Hong Kong for many ex-territorial games.

4. Our school continued to have outstanding performance in the promotion of education for sustainable development. After being assessed our effort and performance, and our school continued to be granted the “Exemplary School” status recognized by the National Working Committee in China for the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Project on Education for Sustainable Development. Moreover, our school was granted the Environmental Achievement Awards 2012 by the United Nations Environment Programme Foundation and Hong Kong Environmental Protection Association.

5. Our school has established an extensive and close social network in the community so that students can extend their learning opportunities beyond geographical barriers. We have strong social network through/with the support of the Queen Elizabeth School alumni. Besides, our school is/was the founder school of the Caretakers of the Environment International, Hong Kong Branch. We provide funding and opportunities for students to participate annually in international youth environment conferences. Our students have traveled to more than ten countries, including Sweden, Italy, Kenya, the United States, Poland, Dubai etc. The Hong Kong Education Bureau recommended our school to establish a partnership with the Rotary Club of Hong Kong Sunrise. Having the Rotarians as mentors, our students have good role models from the high achievers from different sectors of our society. In conjunction with Po Leung Kuk, the Lions Club of Hong Kong North, our school provides students with various career education programs. The programs include career seminars, table manners seminars, interview workshops and other programs. They offer students adequate preparation for their future career development. In addition, the Hong Kong Wetland Park has also invited our school to join in partnership to provide expert training for our students. Our students can use English, Cantonese or and Mandarin to explain various environmental and ecological concepts to visitors in the Park.
