Orientation Activities and Healthy Living

To introduce Pre-S.1 students to secondary school life, master learning skills and enhance learning motivation, we organize a compulsory S.1 orientation program (prior to school commencement), ranging from meetings to workshops, seminars and bridging courses (including Chinese, English, Mathematics, Integrated Science and Life and Society).

Our school emphasizes on physical and mental development of students. In addition to Physical Education, we also encourage students to take part in a variety of sporting events and competitions so as to enhance their physical fitness. School Facilities (for Supporting Students with Special Educational Needs)

Our school Hall and all classrooms are air-conditioned. There are multiple facilities within the school campus, including a hall, a playground, a covered playground and classrooms. Special rooms include Computer Rooms, Information Technology Learning Centre, Library, Geography Room, Design and Technology Workshop, Graphical Communication Room, Home Economics (cookery and dress-making) Room, Art Room, Music Room, Multimedia Production Workshop, Careers Room, Language Learning Centers and four laboratories are provided for various learning purposes. In addition, there are two basketball courts and a shared multi-purpose stadium with Shau Kei Wan Government Secondary School. A small Butterfly Field are opened up to promote environmental protection education.

Learning and Teaching Plan

Whole-school Language Policy:
Our school mainly adopts Chinese as the medium of instruction (CMI) in junior forms whereas English or Chinese is used as the teaching medium in elective subjects in senior forms. To bridge the gap of senior secondary curriculum, extended learning activities (ELAs) in English, within 25% of lesson time, are implemented in subjects like Mathematics, Science, Geography, Computer Literacy, Life and Society, Design and Technology, Home Economics, Visual Arts, Music and Physical Education in junior forms. ELAs occupy 10% the most in tests and exams. We expect our students progressively develop a good language command. (Please refer to school website for details.)

Learning and Teaching Strategies:
Whole-person development: Our school focuses on developing students’ learning habit and enhancing their learning ability to encounter challenges, develop potential and make progress. We aim at nurturing students with positive values, caring others and the community. Our school provides broad and diversified curriculum including Arts, Science, Commerce, Design and Information Technology. Students can choose subjects based on their interests and abilities. Popular subjects: Travel and Hospitality Studies, Design and Technology, Technology and Living (Food or Dress and Design), Visual Arts are our highlights which unlock students’ manifold potentials.

2. Curriculum highlights: Our school provides students with diversified courses. Teachers target on inspiring students’ potential and catering for individual needs. Teaching strategies, like multi-level questioning, tiered assignments, cooperative learning are adopted to engage students in class activities. Besides, “School based elite group “and “after-class tutoring group” are set up to cater for learning diversity. “Enhancement & enrichment activities” and “Gifted education programs” are offered after school. Outstanding students are recommended to gifted programmes. Senior students are trained to be tutors for the juniors. To keep abreast of the ever-changing world, we also develop e-learning, effective use of information technology to foster students’ multiple potentials by promoting positive and self-learning attitude.

Development of the Four Key Tasks:
(1) Reading to Learn: To strengthen students’ reading habit and improve their language proficiency, our school encourages reading in different means, like Morning Reading Session, Reading Ambassador Scheme, Extensive Reading Award Program, Holiday Reading Program, book report competitions and sharing by students and teachers.
(2) Interactive E-learning: All teachers are provided with a notebook. A computer, projector and multimedia equipment are installed in each classroom, i-pad are also provided for the effectiveness of teaching and learning. School intranet also enables easy communication among students, parents and teachers.
(3) Project Learning: Our school focuses both on quality and quantity of Project learning. It is integrated into Life and Society so that junior students can master the generic skills to enhance quality of work.
(4) Moral and Civic Education: Our school holds board design competitions, writing competitions, slogan competitions and visits based on topics related to Moral and Civic Education every year. We also cover National conditions and Chinese culture recognition in morning assembly, study tour and sister school exchange program so as to raise students’ awareness towards the Country and the society.

Life Planning Education:
Career and life planning education is significant in the latest school 3-year Major Concerns. Our school runs activities in various modes, such as seminars, visits, workshops, sharing sessions, taster programmes; offer internet access to self- exploration platforms, provide counseling and so on to give students informed choices, understand individual needs and make career planning and management. Our primary target is to develop students’ self understanding, recognizing their own strengths and weaknesses, interests and abilities, thereby explore self development, make timely reflection of personal choice, and thus plan their future. Career planning courses are run according to students’ intellectual growth. For S.1 to S.3 students, we aim at developing their self-understanding. Activities are targeted on raising their awareness of their strengths and weaknesses in area like life skills, learning modes, personality and interests. For S.4 to S.6, we arrange students to visit universities, attend taster programmes run by institutions. As further studies and career exploration are the most appropriate, there are taster programmes or visits to institutions and organizations in different industries so that students are well informed of their options and make appropriate choice after graduation.

Student Support

Whole School Approach to Catering for Learner Diversity:
To cater for the learners’ difference, we adopt split classes, in accordance with their learning abilities, in core subjects. We assign teachers and teaching assistants to run tutorial classes for academic low achievers. Besides, we offer enhancement course and enrichment programs for both junior and senior forms, leadership training and gifted education program for capable students. The school sets up Enrichment Group for the Gifted. Responsible teachers are well trained and experienced in handling fund allocation. Professionals are hired to provide training and coach them for various inter-school competitions to enhance confidence.

Whole School Approach to Integrated Education:
The Student Support Team of the school is responsible for planning, implementation and review of the support of integrated education. The members include the Vice Principal, the Counselling Officer, the Special Education Needs Coordinator and the School Social Worker. The team is committed to build a caring campus. To support students with special education needs in the "Whole School Approach" mode, and to promote the support measures for students with special educational needs, and to invite parents and relevant professionals to attend case meetings and follow-up support to the needed students. The school has a flexible use of the "Learning Support Grant" to outsource professional services such as Specific Learning Difficulties training courses, speech therapy, social skill training groups and individual counselling and etc. We also provide learning, test and examination adjustment for students with special educational needs.

Measures to provide adaptation for Learning and Assessment:
Tests, examinations, class work and homework are tools to assess students’ academic performance. Promotion and repeat policy:
1. Students with proper conduct and academic level can be promoted.
2. Students with unsatisfactory performance: Parents are informed on Parents’ Day when the Half-yearly Examination Report issued. For no improvement shown in the Yearly Examination, students have to repeat.
3. Students on-trial of promotion: On-trial promotion is only given to those who complete an academic support scheme with satisfactory performance.

Home-School Co-operation and School Ethos

Home-School Co-operation:
It has been the 30th anniversary since our Parent-teacher Association was established. It works as a bridge between the school and parents. The parent representatives are elected through voting. Regular meetings with the school representatives are held. Parent-teacher Association organizes Annual General Meeting, Parents’ Workshop, Handcraft Classes, Family Trip, Barbecue Gathering, Education Talk every year. The joint effort of parents and the school facilitates the growth of students.

School Ethos:
We are a school with a pure and modest ethos. Being self-disciplined and positive in learning, our students lead a healthy school life. The school provides various scholarships and award schemes so as to encourage active learning. We also organize “Big Brothers Big Sisters Program”, “P.A.T.H.S to Adulthood” and “Smarteen Project” in junior forms. We employ an Assistant Student Counselor, possessing professional qualification, to assist school social workers for the caring of students. Talks, training camps, life experiencing camps, community services and exchange programs are regularly held to develop students’ self-understanding and healthy growth.

Teacher Professional Training and Development:
Our school runs numerous school-based teacher professional training and development activities to enhance teaching expertise, exchange teaching experiences, and strategies. To enhance quality education, our school encourages teachers to take courses, runs regular subject-based exchange and inter-disciplinary peer lessons observation and evaluation activities. Annual visit with our sister school, Zhongshan Overseas Chinese Secondary School, is conducted to improve teaching quality and sustain professional standard.

Life-wide Learning (including Five Essential Learning Experiences to be provided through Key Learning Areas, extra-curricular activities, co-curricular activities, etc.):
In addition to more than 30 societies and clubs, we also have Scouts, Girl Guides, Red Cross and other uniform teams. Our school is also a member of ‘Adopt a School’ program of Rotary Club of Hong Kong North. In co-operation with the Methodist Epworth Village Community Centre, we arrange a number of leadership training and community service activities to broaden students’ horizons and cultivate them to be future leaders of the community. In addition, our students are active participants in robot design competitions, fashion design competitions, ‘Writers Training’ scheme held by Ming Pao, online courses run by Hong Kong Academy for Gifted Education, exchange activities held by Hong Kong Outstanding Students’ Association, Joint School Science and Mathematics Olympiad, School Speech Festival, Music Festival, Dance Festival and Hong Kong Schools of Sports Federation. SLP: To bridge the senior secondary curriculum, students from junior forms are guided to prepare the "Student Learning Profile", recording their own academic and non-academic learning outcomes and personal growth which enable them to develop a habit of reflection and self-learning approach.
Scholarships: Our Alumni Association, Parent-teacher Association, retired teachers and distinguished alumni set up numerous scholarships. They also sponsor learning activities held outside Hong Kong and competitions to encourage academic and non-academic excellence of students.
Open or inter-school competitions and awards: Our school encourages students to actively participate in inter-school activities and external competitions to broaden their horizons and enhance their motivation. Our students have received myriads of awards in diverse competitions, like Inter-

Students’ talents are fully displayed on the one hand. On the other hand, these events prepare them for further studies and be competent in the workplace.
Partnership Project: The school works closely with the University of Hong Kong, The Chinese University of Hong Kong and The Education University of Hong Kong to improve teaching effectiveness through lessons observation, sharing and workshops. It also expands the learning opportunities, cooperates with voluntary agencies, makes good use of resources in community to promote extensive learning among students.
Careers Guidance: The Life Planning Committee regularly meets with S.5 students in small groups. Under the leadership of teachers, students use various tools to collect information on the institution and the workplace, formulate personal learning strategies to make informed choice of further studies or employment. For the graduating class, interview skills and effective study strategies are significant. Through group activities, under the leadership of the instructor, students can exchange ideas and share experiences, thereby enhancing learning motivation and communication skills. The school also invites alumni to share their valuable growth experiences, including learning experience, exam strategies, preparation before interview, introduction of various kinds of occupation, like job nature, entry point, pathways, prospects, pains and pleasures of the job, etc. Careers teachers will work together to provide guidance and advice.
