Secondary One Entrance

Our school will accept discretionary places. Our school will participate in the Secondary School Places Allocation System through central allocation stage (Applicable for admission to S.1 in September 2023 ).Starting from January 2015, the school accepts students from all districts.
The admission criteria and weightings for S.1 discretionary places are:
(1) Academic results and conduct [40%];
(2) Extra-curricular activities and social services [30%]; and
(3) Interview and others [30%].

Orientation Activities and Healthy Living

S.1 Bridging Course and S.1 Orientation Day are organised in July every year. The S.1 Bridging Course is comprised of two parts: a 3-day training camp at the Whampao Military Academy and an on-campus training course on the 3 core subjects, Science and some extra-curricular activities to get students prepared for their secondary school life. S.1 Parents’ Night is also arranged to showcase students' learning outcomes in late October.
Healthy campus is one of our major concerns as we have participated in the ‘Healthy School Programme’ organised by the Chinese University of Hong Kong since 2013. All departments and committees are encouraged to put health education into practice and give support to the development of students’ physical growth, mental health, and civic-consciousness.
Students are encouraged to purchase healthy lunch boxes from the authorised on-site meal portioning supplier or bring their own lunch boxes, using the school’s steamer.

School Facilities (for Supporting Students with Special Educational Needs)

All classrooms, special rooms and the assembly hall are air-conditioned and have access to the computer and Wi-Fi networks to facilitate eLearning. In addition to the standardised classrooms, we also have 2 Laboratories, School Library, Multimedia Learning Centre, Computer-assisted Learning Centre, English Language Self-access Centre (ELSAC), Technology and Living (Clothing) Room, Home Economics Room, Music Room, Visual Art Room, Multi-purpose Rooms, Study Rooms, Student Union Room, Prefect Room, Parent Resources Centre, Conference Room, Social Worker Rooms, Campus TV Room, Medical Room, Tuck Shop, General Office and Car Park. We are now planning to renovate some new facilities, including a Physical Training Centre, a Forensic Science Laboratory and a STEAM Room, to offer students with more varied learning activities. Our student hostel is a six-storey building. It provides boarding service for 120 students and it is well-equipped with a canteen, a laundry room, and each floor has a private study room, bedrooms and a living room.

School's Major Concerns:

School Management Organisation:
Under school-based management, the school is managed through the co-operation of various departments and committees. We also promote collaboration among the sponsoring body, the Principal, staff members, parents and alumni to seek consensus for mapping out and implementing our school policies.

The Incorporated Management Committee (IMC) was set up in 2006. It consists of 15 members: representatives of the sponsoring body, the Principal, representatives of teachers, parents, alumni and independent community members.

School Green Policy:

Learning and Teaching Plan

Whole-school Language Policy:
Our school puts great emphasis on bi-literacy and tri-lingualism, especially English learning and teaching. To cultivate a rich English language environment and arouse students’ interest and confidence in speaking English, various language learning activities and programmes, such as Language Across the Curriculum (LAC) Day, Read Aloud Programme for junior form students, theme-based learning projects, English Week, English Ambassador Training Programme, TW Joint-school Oxbridge English Summer Camp, English Study Tours to England and Singapore, English Drama Competitions, Speech Festival, sharing sessions with foreign exchange students and the use of English Language Self-access Centre (ELSAC) are organised with the support of the Native English Teacher and English teachers.

Learning and Teaching Strategies:
Our school adopts the student-centred approach and interactive learning and teaching modes are implemented in every classroom. To enhance the effectiveness of learning and teaching, eLearning and Self-directed Learning are our major concerns to facilitate students’ learning through personalised note-taking and study skills to help them become independent and life-long learners. Multi-disciplinary Project Learning Programme is one of the pedagogies for building students’ generic skills, such as collaboration, communication, problem-solving, analytical skills and critical thinking.

School-based curriculum:
1. Electives: 2X, 3X and 4X. Our school offers 13 electives for students.
2. Curriculum highlights: The 13 electives include: Business, Accounting and Financial Studies, Information and Communication Technology, Tourism and Hospitality Studies, Economics, Chinese History, History, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Geography, Visual Arts, Physical Education and Diversified Development Programme are provided for students to choose, according to their interest and abilities. Mathematics (Extended Part Module 1) is also offered for students with greater capability and interest in Calculus and Statistics.

Development of the Four Key Tasks:
1. Reading to learn: Chinese Poetry Reading and English Read Aloud Programme are integrated into the junior form curriculum to improve students’ Chinese and English reading and speaking skills. The School Library arranges various activities to promote good reading habits to induce students to read extensively and broaden the spectrum of their learning through Morning Reading Sessions, Reading Award Scheme, Book Fair, Book Exchange Programme and Book Sharing Sessions.
2. Using eLearning to facilitate interactive learning: Teachers use iPads and other eLearning resources to meet students’ needs, simulate them to learn independently and conduct the lessons more effectively. Students are also encouraged to take part in different inter-school learning activities and competitions about IT and gain more personal learning experience.
3. Project Learning: Project Learning Programme for S2 and S3 is organised by the Academic Committee, in collaboration with different subjects and committees, with the aim to equip students with generic skills, such as collaboration, communication, creativity, information technology, critical thinking, problem-solving and study skills.
4. Moral and Civic Education: Various learning activities and community services are conducted during class periods, hall assemblies and OLE days to raise students’ awareness of their surroundings, enhance their sense of responsibility, nurture their civic-consciousness, enrich their life experiences and nurture their positive values towards life.

Life Planning Education:
Our Career Guidance Committee works closely with different departments, committees and other external organisations to provide a series of aptitude tests, learning activities, games, training courses and programmes, workshops, competitions, joint-school life planning education seminars, parents' meeting, job tasting programmes, overseas career and study tours, interview workshops and 'Life Companion Programme' to cater for the needs of life planning education of students at different levels. Student Support

Whole School Approach to Catering for Learner Diversity:
Our school implements small class teaching and flexible grouping of students to cater for students’ diverse learning needs. Under school-based curriculum, the school encourages teachers in different subjects to work collaboratively and design learning materials and activities at different levels so as to address students’ diversity. We also provide enrichment programmes and enhancement schemes for both more capable and less capable achievers. Counselling teachers work closely with our school social workers and the educational psychologist to provide students and parents with appropriate support and assistance to overcome their learning and social difficulties through in-house programmes and workshops. With the establishment of the system of Chief Form Master, Form Academic Master, Form Discipline Master and Co-class Teachers, students can experience their enjoyable and fruitful secondary school life in C.Y. Ma. Our school was honoured with ‘Excellent Caring School Award’ in the past few years.

Whole School Approach to Integrated Education:
The school supports the Integration Education in a whole-school approach. Our SEN Support Team consists of our Principal, Vice-principals, SEN Coordinator, Chairperson of the Academic Committee and Social Workers. Working along with the Educational Psychologist and the Speech Therapist, we assist SEN students’ learning in various aspects.
With the help of Learning Support Grant and other financial resources, our SEN Coordinator is responsible for designing strategic supporting programmes for students, including services about educational psychologist consultation, speech therapy, dyslexia, attention deficit and the like. Moreover, we recruit several teaching assistants to assist students’ learning individually and/or in small groups.
Through the curriculum design, tiered assignments, adjustments of homework and assessments, the school helps students with special educational needs enhance their learning effectiveness. The school also encourages teachers to attend different professional development workshops related to integration education to help cater for learner diversity.
We also stress on the importance of students’ career planning. By organizing different job-tasting programmes, we help students construct their future career path.

Home-School Co-operation and School Ethos

Home-School Co-operation:
The Parent-Teacher Association was established in 1997 with the aims to promote collaborative work between home and school so as to further develop and improve students’ academic performance and whole-person development, to organise various activities and publish annual newsletters for building a close relationship and strong linkage between parents and the school, to provide positive parenting skills to parents and help them strengthen their family bonding, and to offer better welfare to students and let them lead a healthy campus life. The parent volunteers contribute greatly to home-school cooperation and the school was honoured with ‘The Most Caring School to Home-school Cooperation’ organised by Hong Kong Christian Service in 2014.

School Ethos:
Our school creates a caring, positive and welcoming learning atmosphere and we aim to nurture students’ virtues and righteousness through a caring but firm approach. We establish a good rapport between students and teachers and we put emphasis on the importance of self-discipline and mutual respect through various activities and programmes organised by teachers, social workers in different aspects, including moral education and discipline and counselling. Apart from the school-based professional development days, teachers are encouraged to be life-long learners and receive professional development training to improve the effectiveness of learning and teaching. Peer lesson observation and collaborative lesson planning are arranged to enhance teachers’ professional expertise.

Life-wide Learning (including Five Essential Learning Experiences to be provided through Key Learning Areas, extra-curricular activities, co-curricular activities, etc.):
Our school develops students’ learning experiences through a wide variety of Other Learning Experiences (OLE) and other extra-curricular activities, including moral and civic education, community service, career-related experience, aesthetic and cultural development and physical development. We highly recommend students to participate in activities and competitions to make their secondary school life more enjoyable and meaningful and fulfill their full potential with a positive learning environment. All S1 students are required to take part in Scouts or Flag-raising Team and receive training on self-discipline and team building. ‘Trees for Life Development Fund’ was founded and the C.Y. Ma Charity Fund Limited made a donation of $500,000 in 2011 and $400,000 in 2014 to support the Tree Climbing Team to join different activities and an international competition in Singapore.
