Orientation Activities and Healthy Living

To assist the newly admitted Form 1 students in adapting to the new school environment; and to enhance their self-esteem and self-confidence, our school has organized a series of multiple intelligences activities aimed at helping our students cultivate their potentials in the field of physical and arts education during the summer vacation. Our school emphasizes the importance of English Language learning and the P.6 promoting to Form 1 students have to take part in the English Bridging Programme supported by online learning materials aimed at helping them get accustomed to the subjects which use English as the medium of instruction (EMI) before the commencement of their secondary life.
Our school also places emphases on the importance of Healthy Eating. To maintain healthy lifestyle and habit, our students will be required to have their meals at school provided by our designated Green Kitchen and it is hoped that our students will have balanced diet and proper meals. All students are encouraged to do healthy exercise and fitness regularly in order to make sure that they have strong physique.

Classrooms and special rooms are networked and fully equipped with Multi-media IT facilities. Apart from the standard rooms provided, there are two computer rooms equipped with more than 40 computers each, one Project Room and 4 small group-teaching rooms and iPads for Library reading and different subjects to use. School's Major Concerns:

School Management Organisation:
We have already established our Incorporated Management Committee. The school managers are professionals from various fields. They are familiar with the local community and the development of our school. The School Management and Improvement Team, which formulates school policies, consists of the Principal, Vice-principals, senior teachers and all teaching staff. Decisions made by the School Management and Improvement Team are to be coordinated and implemented by the school's four working committees namely the Board of Administration, Studies, Student Support and Student & General Affairs.

Our Incorporated Management Committee was set up in 2006. The committee members include Supervisor, Sponsoring School Body Managers, Principal, Teacher Managers, Parent Managers, Alumni Manager and Independent Manager. Managers are responsible for formulating school policies and monitoring school performance in the quest for quality education.

School Green Policy:
We promote green education through total participation. We believe that students should develop daily habits of conservation. Recycling bins are placed in all classrooms and on school campus. The Green & Health Education Department, the Geography Club and the Green & Health Club are all committed to helping raise students' awareness of a green living style and implementing food waste recycling programs to reduce food waste in our school. Learning and Teaching Plan

Whole-school Language Policy:
We are committed to developing students' bi-literate and tri-lingual competence. We pay special attention to our students' English proficiency. In response to the fine-tuning of our teaching medium, we have introduced the Cross-curricular Language Enhancement Scheme. Integrated Humanities (an integration of Social Studies, Geography and Finance Fundamentals) and Integrated Science (including Physics, Chemistry, Biology and General Science) for S.1-S.3 are taught in English and we have introduced Life-wide Learning / Life-wide English, cross-curricular Extended English courses, English Library Periods, After-school English Great Movies and Solid Memory Learning Platform to help our students build up a strong language foundation. There are among twenty core and elective subjects we offer in NSS, all of which are taught in English, with the exception of Chinese Language, Citizenship and Social Development / Liberal Studies, Chinese History, Tourism and Hospitality Studies, Health Management and Social Care and Visual Arts. Cross-curriculum language learning and English mathematics supplementary programmes are used to prepare junior form students for the HKDSE curriculum.

Learning and Teaching Strategies:
We aim at enhancing students' ability in "Learning to Learn" through various programmes, including "Reading to Learn" and "Project Learning". Quality Assignment Design, Enhancement, Sustainable Support and Remedial Classes, Careers & Life Planning, Multiple Intelligences & Gifted Education and Learning Summer Revision Courses are designed to enhance the students' learning effectiveness. We aim at all-rounded and balanced development of students. The school provides necessary resources and creates capacity for quality education. We have established various uniformed groups and sports teams to help develop students' self-discipline, cooperation and self-esteem. In addition, reading schemes are implemented in the subjects of Chinese and English in a sense of Content Area Reading in collaboration with the Library lesson.

School-based curriculum:
1. Electives: 2X and 3X. Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Chinese History, Geography, Economics, Visual Arts, Information and Communication Technology, Mathematics Extended Modules, Business, Accounting and Financial Studies, Tourism and Hospitality Studies, Health Management and Social Care.
2. Curriculum highlights: To better prepare our students for STEM education, we introduced the STEM Laboratory in 2017-2018 to allow teachers to organize various STEM teaching and learning activities. STEM lessons in S.2 level are designed to teach students to use Micro:bit to learn coding. To cater for students' diverse needs, the school inquiry-based Integrated Science curriculum has been developed for our S.3 students. All subjects stress the importance of interactive learning, autonomous learning, "tablet-based online learning" and elearning, experiential learning, service learning, arts education and life planning in their curriculum.

Life Planning Education:
The school has fully used resources to promote Life Planning. All teams and departments have strengthened the dissemination of information concerning careers and further education like tertiary education in Mainland China and Taiwan to the students. The school has used community resources to stimulate the students to explore their own strengths and weaknesses in making choices. For senior forms, a continuous adoption of individual careers counselling programmes are used to analyze the characters and self-concepts of each individual student. Different departments sustain the careers-related seminars, the job placement programme, and apprenticeships to widen the horizons of students.

Student Support

Whole School Approach to Catering for Learner Diversity:
We adapted the Whole School Approach to Integrated Education Scheme in September 2008. Some of our teachers have completed the necessary training as required. In addition, the school has adopted the three-tiers mechanism to cultivate our talented and gifted students and assist the learning progress of our gifted students such as after-school enhancement support and tutorial classes.

Whole School Approach to Integrated Education:
Our Student Support Team consists of the Vice Principal, SENCO, guidance teacher, Chinese, English or Mathematics teachers, the School Social Worker, Teaching Assistant, Speech Therapists and Educational Psychologist. Besides conducting assessments on the students, the Educational Psychologist (EP) has also attended the Individual Educational Plan Meeting with the Parents, so as to formulate and evaluate the effectiveness of the Individual Educational Plan. The EP also conducts Parents workshops to help them to master the effective caring and teaching skills of their children. In addition to the professional development training program provided by the EP, teachers are also encouraged to attend the training course provided by the tertiary Institute, so as to strengthen the competence of the teachers to take care of the students with Special Educational Needs. Our school uses the Learning Support Grant and the other resources to employ 2 teaching assistants and to buy professional services including attention training programme, learning difficulties training programme and school-based speech therapy services and etc., to give interdisciplinary cooperation support to the students, so as to raise the students’ academic achievement. To allow the students to recognize the presence of people of different needs in the society, so as to cultivate an inclusive campus, we organize various activities such as sharing by the guest with special needs and to encourage students to take part in inclusive experiential activities. Our school also strives to enhance cooperation with parents, members of student support team will communicate with the parents from time to time and the speech therapist will give professional advice to the parents.

Besides Uniform Tests and Examinations, we have adopted continuous assessments to evaluate students' performance. Continuous assessment will include on-line exercises, book reviews and projects. Home-School Co-operation and School Ethos

Home-School Co-operation:
The Parent-Teacher Association of our school is the major link between the school and our parents. It offers valuable support to the healthy development of our students. It helps to organize activities, both educational and recreational and to strengthen the communication and understanding among teachers, students and parents. The Parent-Teacher Association has also organized seminars and workshops on child education. As the professional development for the school, teachers and parents, educational visits to China have been organized. Outings and cooking classes are organized every year to promote good family connections and home-school cooperation. To provide quality education for our students, our PTA believes that the school, teachers and parents should collaborate more closely to help our students excel and grow.

School Ethos:
We emphasize the cultivation of moral values, positive attitudes and firm discipline of our students. We aim at educating our students to be good citizens who are self-reflective, self-disciplined and self-reliant. We will organize activities to cultivate positive values of life among students. Apart from these, more supporting services are available such as the school social workers and education psychologists who have been offering necessary counselling service and timely support to students in need.

Future Development

School Development Plan:
Our school endeavours to promote students' healthy and balanced development as well as excellent academic attainments through diversified curriculum, a wide repertoire of extra-curricular activities and enriched learning experience. To arouse students' awareness in environmental protection, a green campus will be built. To cherish Tung Wah's goal of "all-round education", we will provide our students with a quality learning environment where they can realize and unleash their potential. We are strongly committed to preparing our students to become good citizens with knowledge and skills, the ability to think independently, readiness to shoulder responsibilities and concern about community affairs.

Teacher Professional Training and Development:
To uplift team morale and professional growth of the staff, Tung Wah Group of Hospitals strongly supports teachers' professional development and training. Seminars and workshops, which are organized by Tung Wah Group of Hospitals, are well-received by our teachers. Teachers show enthusiasm in taking part in the activities and courses organized by the EDB and other institutions.

Life-wide Learning (including Five Essential Learning Experiences to be provided through Key Learning Areas, extra-curricular activities, co-curricular activities, etc.):
Activity-based learning and Chinese Martial Arts are incorporated into the school curriculum. There are more than forty clubs of academic, aesthetics, sports, service and interests in nature. A) Content for Development of the Four Key Tasks:
1. Our Read to Learn Policy is carried out in the following ways:
(a) Regular Library Lessons promote reading among students. There are book recommendations, online reading, book fairs and Reading Club activities in which students can share the joy of reading through online reading. Besides, the Reading Award Scheme has also been well-received by students.
(b) The Content Area Reading materials and books of various subjects are uploaded to the school's website or intranet for students to read in their spare time.
(c) Students will be reading passages of different themes in the morning reading lessons. This reading activity aims at enhancing students affective learning through reflections.
(d) We have library lessons which teach students how to collect, verify, select and integrate data. They aim at raising students' digital competence.
2. We encourage and facilitate students' lesson preparation and self-learning by uploading notes, subject-based learning kits, assignments and tests on e-class and Google Classroom.
3. Project Learning enables students to acquire generic skills in issue-based & inquiry-based learning through life events analysis.
4. We have the Moral and Civic Education Committee to formulate and coordinate work on moral and civic education. All departments, subject panels and school clubs will integrate the themes according to health, environmental friendliness and values education into Morning Assemblies, After-school Periods, Post-examination Periods, Homeroom Periods, and Summer Learning.

B) Our sponsoring body, TWGHs, has provided numerous scholarships (more than 15 of different kinds) for the students to apply to according to their academic performance, ECA capabilities, gifted abilities and potential, morality and character development with good attitudes and family socio-economic backgrounds. The school makes every attempt to help each of the students apply for external scholarships so that they are able to have abundant resources to widen their horizons of the world.
The school emphasizes the importance of all round education and all the students are encouraged to get engaged in different local and international competitions. On average, we have received around one thousand five hundred awards and prizes annually. We are so proud of the performance of the students in Latin Dance. Within the short period of four years, our Latin dancers have participated in a number of renowned competitions in Britain, Korea, Italy, China and Malaysia with countless commendations and recognition granted. In 2015, our Latin Dance Team represented Hong Kong to take part in the Blackpool Dancesports Competition and we were awarded Second Place at the international level. Also, our Chinese Dance Team and the Marching Band have outperformed other teams in Hong Kong and their performances are encouraging.
The school places high emphases on the importance of exchange programmes since the students will be exposed to multicultural education. Annually, we have organised around 10 excursions and trips to different Chinese cities and foreign nations.
