Wai Kiu College is a DSS Co-ed secondary school located in Hong KongThe school was founded in 1968. The school is located in Sham Shui Po, and covers an area of approximately 2500 square meters. The supervisor/chairman of the school management committee is CHU Chung Shing BBS Mr.,And the principal is CHENG Che Yin MH Mr. undefined. The sponsoring body of Wai Kiu College is Wai Yeung Merchants Association Education Fund Limited and is a non-religious school. Orientation Activities and Healthy Living

Our school provides guidance and counseling service for students based on their personality and needs, aiming to build self-esteem and boost self-confidence. All S.1 students must attend an adventure-based training camp as part of their orientation to enhance their resilience. Summer bridging courses are also provided to speed up S.1 students’ adaptation to secondary life. Learning and Teaching Plan

Whole-school Language Policy:
In the junior form, we have EMI classes where English is used to teach all the subjects except Chinese. In addition, some of our S.1 and S.2 classes use Mandarin as the medium of instruction in Chinese lessons. The senior forms students can choose to either take their examination in Chinese or English.

Learning and Teaching Strategies:
For junior forms, students are assigned to different classes in accordance with the English level. An English class was provided with English as the medium of instruction. For senior forms, we do not have streaming based on Arts and Science. Instead, students can choose from two blocks of elective subjects according to their learning needs and styles in addition to the four core subjects. This helps to maximize their learning outcomes. The school also reserves extra funding to organize various apply learning courses by the service providers especially for Secondary 5 students, so that students can explore the direction of lifelong learning as well as their career prospects.
We also have the ‘All-rounded Learning Award Scheme’ to motivate students to strive for excellence in various aspects, especially their academics.

Development of the Four Key Tasks:
Moral and Civic Education: Through diversified talks and activities, students are cultivated with positive values and attitudes. Foundations of National Education have been reinforced to nurture students’ sense of citizenship towards the motherland.
Reading to Learn: Different types of reading schemes are promoted to encourage students to make good use of e-reading platforms in order to enhance their language proficiency. Students can also read extensively according to their personal interests and needs to cultivate their interests in various areas.
Project Learning: Interdisciplinary project learning is arranged, which can help students develop a good habit of self-directed learning and active knowledge acquisition. This can also broaden their horizons and cultivate their generic skills.
STEM Education: Students are encouraged to actively participate in STEM-related learning activities on and off campus to enhance their use of information technology and apply interdisciplinary knowledge and skills.

Life Planning Education:
The Careers Team provides personal tutoring scheme, which allows teachers and the career planning assistant to conduct individual counselling for students on the selection of elective subjects, further education and future employment. In the meeting, students’ career interests are analyzed to work out some basic information for students to identify their personalities and help them to choose courses and occupations that suit them in future. In addition, the team conducts personality tests and experiential activities in S.2 and S.4 to enable students to identify their personality strengths and apply them to career planning.

Student Support

Whole School Approach to Catering for Learner Diversity:
Living up to the ideals of equal education opportunities, our school provides various support programmes for students with financial difficulty. School fee remission, scholarships and subsidies are available for families in need of financial assistance. Immigrant students need to join our schools “Immigrant Adjustment Scheme” which provides support to integrate into society such as life coaching and English remedial classes. The main aim of the scheme is to boost students’ confidence and social network.
Other programs to help students include School-based After-class Learning Support, District-based Tutorials provided by NGOs and Student Activities Support Grant.

Whole School Approach to Integrated Education:
Our school has established a special team to cater for learner diversity aiming at providing appropriate support and advice to students with special education needs. There are a wide range of activities organized including “peer counselling scheme”, “new student adaption scheme”, “home visit scheme”, “newly arrival scheme” etc. Besides, we also offer a “Chinese writing class” to support junior form students who have learning difficulties and organize an “interrelationship and social skills enhancement team” for students who face problems in socializing. In addition, our school has employed an educational psychologist to provide necessary support for SEN students, as well as suggestions, advice and follow-up for students whose assessment reports are outdated. In addition, appropriate adjustments will be made to the curriculum design and examination paper arrangements to meet the different needs of students.

Home-School Co-operation and School Ethos

Home-School Co-operation:
The PTA holds a variety of activities every year to facilitate the communication between parents. Among all the activities it organizes, ‘Parent-child Communication Talk’, “Parent-child Computer Course” ‘Sex Education’ and ‘A Talk on Adapt to be a Secondary Student’ are the most popular and welcomed ones. Besides, in order to strengthen the cooperation and connection between school and parents, parents and all the teachers participate in School Picnic together every year. The comfortable and relaxing environment provides a chance for teachers and parents to communicate freely together which helps strengthening a closer relationship.

School Ethos:
In 50 years of the school’s establishment, Wai Kiu has always focused on whole-person development. As the school pays close attention to students’ ethnic and moral development, students in Wai Kiu are sincere and honest. Future Development

School Development Plan:
Given the flexibility of DSS mechanism, Wai Kiu College has adopted the ‘Whole-person Development’. In addition to the NSS educational theory, students also need to attend Uniform Group trainings, overseas exchange programs and take active part in community services so as to prepare themselves as future good youths with both moral integrity and professional competence.
In the coming two years, the school is going to work closely on ‘Strengthen national education through different channels’, ‘Cater for learner diversity, enhance learning ability’, ‘Realise multiple potentials, promote whole-person development’ and ‘Promote e-learning, facilitate self-directed learning’ so as to fully equip the students and encourage them to go beyond themselves.

Teacher Professional Training and Development:
Teachers are encouraged to continue their studies and actively participate in all types of training courses. In addition, the Teacher Development Day which takes place twice a year provides teachers with workshops, seminars, teaching exchanges, etc. in accordance with the needs of teaching and learning, and establishes a professional teaching team to promote school development.

Life-wide Learning (including Five Essential Learning Experiences to be provided through Key Learning Areas, extra-curricular activities, co-curricular activities, etc.):
Form 1 students are required to join one of the following Uniform Groups, namely Scout, Venture Scout, Road Safety Patrol, Adventure Corps, St. John Ambulance Brigade and Marching Band. The training consists of foot drillings, life skill lectures and discipline trainings which help school achieve the aims that nurture students’ discipline, perseverance and resilience.
Multiple-Intelligence classes are held every week. Students are given wide range of choices, they are free to choose any of the 20 societies under 5 categories namely academic, community service, sports, music and visual arts. These societies are carefully designed to discover their potentials in different aspects and facilitates both physical and psychological development. In addition, students also get opportunities to attend some overseas exchange programmme through ‘Global Learning Village Scheme’, from which they broaden their horizons and enlarge their experiences.
